Benefits of Blower Door Testing

While there are many benefits to establishing the air tightness of your home in Florida, here are some of the main benefits of a blower door test:

  • Reducing energy usage by resolving air leakage
  • Detects moisture control issues in the home
  • Improves home comfort by reducing drafts
  • Improves indoor air quality

Many customers ask us how the blower door test works, and the answer is very simple. A blower door is basically a powerful fan that one of our technicians will install temporarily to the frame of an exterior door—typically the main entrance. While the fan sucks air from inside the house, the air pressure inside your home is lowered. This allows for the higher air pressure outside the home to flow through any cracks or places that are not sealed tightly.

Then we use a pressure gauge to determine the amount of air leakage in your home by measuring the difference in pressure of the air outside and inside your home. We also use an airflow measuring device to determine the amount of airflow. These techniques help us pinpoint areas in your home that need improvement or more air sealing.

Using Advanced Technology

While there are two basic types of blower door tests, your contractor should use a calibrated door test. This type of test involves the use of advanced technology, such as pressure gauges that measure the differences in air pressure. With an uncalibrated blower door test, it will only determine where there are air leaks, which you can do on your own with the candle test. This is only half of providing accurate results.

By only providing an air leakage test, there is no method for determining the overall air tightness of your home. With a calibrated test, our technicians can determine the amount of air leakage and how effective air sealing will be for overall home efficiency.

How to Prepare for a Blower Door Test in Florida

To prepare for one of our blower door tests in Florida, do the following:

Close all windows, exterior doors (except the one being used), and open interior doors

Cover your fireplace ashes with damp newspapers and shut the damper and fireplace door

Turn down your thermostats, including the one on your water heater

By taking these small steps, you can greatly improve the accuracy of the results and minimize disruption to your home.
